What does a red tag on a furnace mean?
A red tag means a technician has identified a gas-related code or safety issue. Read the tag carefully: it explains the condition found and whether the appliance must be shut down. Follow those instructions, and do not restart equipment that has been tagged out or remove the tag. Arrange follow-up with a qualified gas technician; the appliance should only return to service after the identified issue has been addressed and it is cleared for use.
Smell gas? Leave the building first
If you smell the rotten-egg odour associated with natural gas, hear hissing near a gas line or appliance, or suspect a gas leak, get everyone outside. Do not operate lights, appliances, switches, or phones inside. From a safe location, call Enbridge Gas emergency service at 1-866-763-5427; call 911 if there is an immediate danger. Do not try to locate or repair the leak yourself.
A CO alarm is an emergency
Carbon monoxide (CO) is poisonous and cannot be seen or smelled. If your CO alarm sounds, leave the home immediately and call 911 from outside. Do not re-enter until emergency responders say it is safe. Natural-gas detectors and CO alarms detect different hazards, so one does not replace the other. People sometimes search for a “furnace CO2 leak”; with a furnace, the urgent concern is usually carbon monoxide (CO), not carbon dioxide (CO2).
Water around the furnace and no heat
Water may come from a condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace, a humidifier, or nearby plumbing. A backed-up drain or a safety switch can stop heating, but the water source needs to be identified before assuming the cause. Keep clear of wet electrical parts and do not remove furnace panels. If there is no gas odour or CO alarm and it is safe to do so, note where the water is coming from, check the thermostat setting and any displayed error code, then arrange service. Avoid repeatedly resetting a furnace that keeps shutting down.
When should you book a furnace inspection?
Book a qualified technician if the red tag requires follow-up, the furnace will not heat, it shuts down repeatedly, or water keeps returning. Share a photo of the tag, the furnace make and model, any error code, and when the problem started. That information can help the technician prepare. For a gas odour or CO alarm, leave and call emergency services or the gas utility first; an online booking is not an emergency response.
