Heat Pump Rebates in Ontario 2026: What Gas-Heated Homes Actually Get

You'll see "up to $7,500" plastered across heat pump marketing everywhere, including ours. That figure is real — but it's for homes currently heated with electric, oil, or propane. If your home runs on natural gas, which is most of York Region, your actual maximum through the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program is up to $2,000 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump, or $3,000 for ground-source.

The program weights rebates toward homes switching off higher-emission or higher-cost heating (electric resistance, oil, propane), since that's where a heat pump makes the biggest efficiency and cost jump. A gas furnace is already relatively cheap to run, so the incentive to switch — and the rebate behind it — is smaller.

A lot of gas-heated homes still add a heat pump as a hybrid system — the heat pump handles cooling and most of the shoulder-season heating efficiently, while the furnace kicks in on the coldest days. You get lower summer cooling costs and a legitimate air conditioner upgrade, with the smaller rebate as a bonus rather than the whole reason to do it.

If you're considering a ground-source (geothermal) heat pump instead of air-source, the gas-heat tier goes up to $3,000 instead of $2,000 — still well below the electric/oil/propane tier's $12,000, but worth knowing before you compare quotes on system type.
