What to Do When Your Furnace Stops at 2 A.M. (and When to Call Us)

Gas smell, a sounding CO alarm, soot or scorch marks near the furnace — get everyone outside immediately, call your gas utility's emergency line, then call a licensed technician. That's not a judgment call, and it doesn't wait until morning. Everything below assumes none of that applies.

Thermostat actually set to heat and a few degrees above room temperature, batteries not dead, the furnace's own power switch (it looks like a light switch, usually near the unit) not bumped off, and the breaker not tripped. It sounds obvious until it's the actual answer at 2 a.m.

A furnace that's running but the house is slowly cooling, or short-cycling, usually isn't a middle-of-the-night emergency — it's uncomfortable, not dangerous, especially for a few hours. Close doors to unused rooms, layer up, and keep an eye on the thermostat reading rather than panicking at the first cold draft.

If the furnace is completely dead and it's a hard freeze outside, the real risk is frozen pipes, not comfort. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, let faucets drip slightly on the coldest nights, and know where your main water shutoff is — just in case. A space heater can bridge a few hours safely if used properly and not left unattended.
