Cold Snap in Georgina? Why Your Furnace Runs but the House Stays Cold

During a cold snap, a furnace can run for long periods while rooms warm unevenly. Here are safe checks, winter warning signs, and when to book a diagnosis.

Cold-weather comfort

Why a colder day asks more of your heating system

The colder the outdoor air gets, the faster a home loses heat. Air leaks and insulation change how much heat the home needs; an assessment is needed for a real recommendation.

Trusted winter safety guidance

First, separate weak heat from no heat

If the furnace is blowing warm air but the home is not reaching the thermostat setting, note which rooms are cold, whether the furnace cycles on and off, and how long the issue has lasted. A furnace that will not start or produces no heat is a different service problem. Symptoms help the technician choose the right checks; they do not identify a failed part by themselves.

Try a few safe checks

Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and the temperature setting is above the room temperature. Check the air filter and replace it only with the correct size and type if it is visibly dirty. Make sure supply registers and return grilles are not covered by furniture, rugs, or stored items. Do not remove furnace panels, bypass switches, or repeatedly reset a unit that keeps shutting down.

After snowfall, look at outdoor vents from a safe location

Snow or ice can block the outdoor intake or exhaust of some high-efficiency furnaces and other fuel-burning appliances. From ground level, check that vent openings are visible and clear of snow, ice, leaves, and other debris. Do not climb onto a roof, chip ice from a vent, or use a tool that could damage the piping. If a vent is blocked or you are unsure what you are seeing, contact a qualified technician.

A gas smell or CO alarm is an emergency

If you smell rotten eggs or hear hissing near gas equipment, leave the home immediately. Do not operate switches, phones, or appliances inside. From a safe location call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427, or call 911 if there is immediate danger. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911; do not re-enter until emergency responders say it is safe. A CO alarm does not detect a natural-gas leak.

Why heating demand changes during a cold snap

A home loses heat faster as the outdoor temperature falls below the indoor temperature. Air leakage, insulation, windows, room layout, and ventilation all affect how much heat the home needs. A long furnace run can therefore have several causes, from unusually cold weather to airflow or equipment problems. The illustrative chart below explains the relationship; it is not a measurement of your home or a promise about equipment capacity.

What to tell the technician

When booking, share your community, furnace make and model, thermostat reading, any displayed error code, whether the fan is running, and which rooms are cold. Mention if the furnace is short-cycling or if the issue started after a snowfall. If the furnace is producing no heat, ask whether your call qualifies for the $0 diagnosis offer; repairs, parts, and replacements are quoted separately.
