Ductless heat pumps
Ductless Heat Pump Not Heating or Cooling? Check This First
A ductless unit that's stopped working is often a dirty filter, a snowed-in outdoor unit, or a remote setting — not a dead system. Check these first.

Check the mode, not just the temperature
It's easy to bump a ductless remote into fan-only or dehumidify mode without noticing — confirm it's actually set to heat or cool, not just that the temperature number looks right. Check the batteries too; a weak remote can send an incomplete signal that the indoor unit half-registers.
A dirty filter chokes the whole system
Ductless indoor filters are meant to be rinsed regularly — every few weeks in heavy use — and a clogged one restricts airflow enough to trigger weak heating or cooling, icing on the indoor coil, or an error code. This is the single most common "it just stopped working" call we see on ductless systems.
Check the outdoor unit before assuming the worst
Snow, ice, or debris packed around or on top of the outdoor condenser will choke a cold-climate heat pump's performance fast — clear a foot of clearance on all sides and on top if you can do it safely. Ice buildup on the unit itself during a defrost cycle is normal; a solid block of ice that never seems to clear is not.
Water leaking from the indoor head
Usually a blocked or disconnected condensate drain line, or a drain pump that's failed on units that use one. Shut the unit off if it's actively dripping onto a wall or floor rather than letting it run — the fix is usually straightforward, but not something to ignore.
An error code on the indoor unit or remote
Most manufacturers use blinking-light or numeric error codes for specific faults — refrigerant issues, sensor faults, communication errors between indoor and outdoor units. Note the exact code or blink pattern before you call; it narrows down the visit and often tells us what to bring. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending a repair or a replacement, the same standard we hold on every call.
