Check what is already in the attic
The material, coverage, depth, condition, and gaps around the attic hatch or eaves affect what an upgrade should include. A technician should assess the space and explain the starting condition before recommending more material; adding insulation over an unresolved moisture or ventilation problem can create new issues.
Air leaks and insulation are related but different work
Warm indoor air can escape through ceiling penetrations, attic hatches, plumbing openings, and other gaps. Air sealing and insulation may both be needed, but they are separate tasks with different materials and safety requirements. Ask the contractor to list each part of the scope so you can see what the estimate covers.
Ventilation and bathroom exhaust need a look
The assessment should check that roof ventilation paths are not blocked and that bathroom exhaust air is routed outdoors rather than into the attic. Moisture staining, frost, mold-like growth, or damp insulation should be investigated before new material is installed.
Do not disturb unknown older insulation
If you find loose, pebble-like vermiculite or another unidentified older material, do not move it, vacuum it, or start an insulation project over it. Have the material assessed by a qualified professional and follow the applicable safety guidance before work proceeds.
Ask for a clear written quote
The quote should identify the areas being treated, materials and target coverage, air-sealing work if included, ventilation corrections if included, cleanup, access assumptions, and any exclusions. It should also explain extra work and the price before that work begins.
Verify any rebate before budgeting for it
Home-renovation incentives may have eligibility rules, contractor requirements, and application windows. Confirm the current program terms directly with the administrator and do not subtract a rebate from your expected project cost until eligibility and approval are confirmed in writing.
